An Information Bearing Entity is a material entity that carries, or concretises, one or more information content entities. A book, a hard drive and a road sign are information bearing entities: the same content can be borne by many of them at once, and destroying one bearer does not destroy the content itself.

Information Bearing Entity is defined in the Common Core Ontologies, a mid-level suite that specialises the top-level categories of Basic Formal Ontology. It is released as part of the maintained, logically consistent CCO release and is reused across the connected ontology modules.
