A Non Name Identifier is a designative information content entity that identifies an entity without being a name in the ordinary sense. Serial numbers, barcodes and record keys are non-name identifiers: they single out an individual, usually within a defined identifier scheme.

Examples

  • a serial number
  • a part number
  • a database key

Where it sits in the suite

Non Name Identifier is defined in the Common Core Ontologies, a mid-level suite that specialises the top-level categories of Basic Formal Ontology. It is released as part of the maintained, logically consistent CCO release and is reused across the connected ontology modules.
