A Reference System is a directive information content entity consisting of the conventions by which measurements or positions are assigned. Coordinate systems, datums and unit systems are reference systems: they fix how a value or a position is to be interpreted.

Examples

  • a geographic coordinate system
  • the SI system of units

Where it sits in the suite

Reference System is defined in the Common Core Ontologies, a mid-level suite that specialises the top-level categories of Basic Formal Ontology. It is released as part of the maintained, logically consistent CCO release and is reused across the connected ontology modules.
